History Of Excavations

Shahr-i-Sokhta, a proto-urban site, is one of the most important archaeological monuments of southeastern Iran and many researchers and archaeologists focused on it to evaluate their information about different process of human evolution in proto urban period. The excavation of this site was conducted in two different stages. The first stage took place in 1966-1978, with the excavations of the Italian expedition directed by Maurizio Tosi , Sandro Salvatori and Marcello Piperno. Later in 1997 the Iranian Archaeological Expedition under S. M. Sajjadi resumed a new stage of excavations in different parts of shahr i Sokhta consist of necropolis and residential areas.
